Houston man shot in parking garage robbery warns others as gunman remains at large
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A man who survived being shot during a parking garage robbery is warning others to stay alert as police search for the gunman.
Houston police released surveillance video showing the suspect approaching Alonzo Sauls inside a parking garage off South MacGregor around 3:15 a.m. on Dec. 28.
"They need to know these garages are not safe," Sauls said.
The video shows the masked suspect walking through the garage with a flashlight, looking into vehicles.
Sauls was sitting in his truck when the man looked inside. The suspect initially walked away before returning with a gun.
"He said, 'Give me your wallet, give me your keys,' got the gun and pow," Sauls recalled.
Sauls said he barely had time to react before he was shot once in the stomach at close range.
He underwent an eight-hour surgery and spent three weeks in the hospital.
"I was blessed through God," Sauls said of surviving.
Eight months later, Sauls hopes someone will recognize the gunman, who police say was wearing a molded face mask, ripped jeans and black-and-white Nike shoes.
"If they haven't caught him, he'll do it again," Sauls said.
He also has a warning for anyone using a parking garage: "Be aware more. Don't talk on the phone. Be real careful. It doesn't matter if you're a man or woman."
